Intralot: WLA Certification for the National Lottery of South Africa

At the recent World Lottery Summit 2012 (WLS 2012) convention and trade show in Montreal, Canada, the WLA Security Control Standard (WLA-SCS:2006) certification was conferred on the consortium Gidani (Proprietary) Limited South Africa that operates the National Lottery of South Africa and in which INTRALOT’s subsidiary in the country, INTRALOT South Africa, is an equity member. The certificate was presented to Gidani CEO Prof. Bongani Aug Khumalo by WLA Security and Risk Management Committee Chairman, Thierry Pujol at the WLS 2012 trade show on Tuesday afternoon, September 11, 2012.

The scope of the WLS-SCS:2006 certification covers Gidani’s central lottery operations in Midrand, as well as its regional offices in Witbank, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Klerksdorp, and Tzaneen. The WLA certified technology of Gidani is provided by INTRALOT which has been also certified with the WLA SCS since 2008.

Upon receiving the certificate Prof. Khumalo stated, “Gidani is immensely humbled by such a recognition of its effort. It is a marvelous commentary on the South African National Lottery. The greater challenge going forward is keeping such a standard now that we have attained it. The responsibility that the accreditation comes with is nothing short of daunting, but we gladly and dutifully accept it.”

Congratulating Prof. Khumalo and Gidani on having received WLA-SCS:2006 certification, WLA Executive Director Jean Jorgensen said, “We are pleased that Gidani is among our WLA-SCS certified lotteries. They have proved that they are implementing sound information security controls, and that the entire organization has the proper mindset to guarantee the integrity of the lottery. They have clearly earned the right to bear this certificate.”

The WLA-SCS:2006 is the lottery sector’s only internationally recognized security standard. The WLA-SCS is based on ISO/IEC 27001:2005, a leading international standard for information security management. It covers 24 general security and integrity controls as well as 72 lottery specific security and integrity controls. In toto, the WLA-SCS:2006 specifies the minimum requirements necessary for the effective management of security in a lottery organization. Compliance with the WLA-SCS:2006 enables a lottery to ensure the integrity, availability, and confidentiality of information that is vital to its secure operation.

Gidani is currently the only lottery on the entire African continent that is certified to the WLA-SCS:2006.
